Welcome to Gilt Moth Tattoo!

Greetings from Greenwich, and thanks for reading our first blog post!

We came up with the idea of starting a blog while the world was locked down, but we’ve been so busy getting the shop ready for reopening, rearranging cancelled appointments and making up for lost time since we reopened that we’re only just getting round to putting pen to paper now.

We’ll try to post once or twice a month on a variety of topics like advice on choosing the right tattooist, product reviews, aftercare advice, meet-the-team features, and we’ll even have a Christmas gift guide later in the year to help inspire you if you’re looking for the perfect present for the tattoo enthusiast in your life.

Some of our posts will cover some of the most common questions we get asked (can you cover my tattoo? how do i become a tattoo artist?) while others will just be a bit of fun.

But for this first post we thought this would be the perfect time to tell you a bit about our shop.

We opened here in historic Greenwich, south-east London back in December 2016. Mel had worked in various tattoo shops across more than a decade in the industry and had a very particular idea about what she wanted to create from her studio here in London - a relaxed space away from the busy central London pace filled with great artists who just want to do cool tattoos that make customers happy. We don’t do drama or divas, we’re just a hard-working group of people who love tattoos and tattooing.

The studio is nice and spacious - we have room for 4 tattooists to work at any given time (we could fit more in but we prefer not to feel too cramped - that’s been a great help with reopening after lockdown as all of our stations are already more than 2 metres apart!).

While the tattooing area is open-plan we do have privacy screens on hand in case you’re getting tattooed in a more intimate area, or if you just don’t want people looking at your pain face!

We are licensed by Greenwich Council and each of our artists has been interviewed and approved by the council’s health department. We try to go above and beyond the hygiene standards set by the council - we don’t mess around when it comes to our customers’ health.

It’s pretty easy to reach us - the train takes less than 10 minutes from London Bridge to Greenwich and we’re just a 2 minute walk from Greenwich station. You can also get to Greenwich on the DLR, or if you feel like getting into the nautical spirit you can even arrive by boat (check TFL’s website for more details of river boat services, we’re a 10 minute walk from Greenwich pier).

If you’re driving then there is pay-and-display on-street parking in the roads around the shop, though it is limited. The nearest car park is the Burney Street car park (just punch SE10 8EX into your sat nav).

We feel so lucky to be based in Greenwich - so much so that we’ll probably devote a whole future blogpost to tips about some of our favourite sights, spots, shops, cafes and restaurants nearby.

Do you offer any other services?

We get a lot of messages asking if we do piercings. Right now we don’t - we’ve tried in the past and there wasn’t enough demand to warrant us having a piercer in the shop every day but we are currently looking into ways we can offer piercing services again, so watch this space.

If you’re looking for other ways to spend money with us then we do sell some merch - you can see in our webstore or in the shop if you’d like to come by and say hello in person.

Thanks for reading!

We hope you’ve enjoyed this first blog post. In our next one we’ll take you through some of the changes we’ve had to make in order to make the studio Covid safe but feel free to send us a message if you want to suggest future topics you’d like to hear more about.

In the meantime remember to subscribe to our mailing list to get all of our blog posts straight in your inbox!
